6 Wonderful Breakfasts—A full breakfast will be available to start every day of our adventure 6 Great Dinners—The River Rock Cafe in Milford, PA, Sprucewold Lodge and Carousel Music Theater in Boothbay Harbor and The Ethan Allen Hotel in Danbury, CT will host delicious and memorable dinners for the group. A Day at The Pine Tree Quilters’ Maine Quilt Show—We will spend a full day at the show (admission includ- ed) allowing enough time to view the beautiful quilts, chat with the suppliers and explore their exhibits.
A Cruise to Darariscove Island and A Visit to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens—A two-hour cruise of the harbor area on the way to Damariscove Island, offering views of lighthouses, seals swimming near the rocks and the nature preserve on Damariscove Island. In the afternoon, we can shop the village of Boothbay Harbor, or spend some time in this new and most exciting garden complex offering beautiful plantings and outstanding structures, sculpture and hardscape. You could also take the early bus
back to the lodge, and relax on the porch with a book.
Another Day of Sightseeing—A trip to the lovely towns of Rockport and Camden. We will visit the beautiful har- bor in Rockport, and then travel to the top of Mt. Battie for spectacular views of the Maine coastline. Lunch on our own in town, and then an opportunity to explore the galleries and shops of Camden, or walk down to the har- bor to see the beautiful wind-jammers that call Camden their home port. Day 1 Wednesday, July 25th—We depart at 6:30 AM from Wheeling, West Virginia. We will make rest and snack stops every 2 to 3 hours as we travel. We will have lunch (on our own) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and visit the Quilt and Textile Museum. We will then proceed to our hotel in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. Following our check-in, we will have dinner in the River Rock Cafe, and have time for a brief stop in Milford, PA, a lovely town on the west bank of the Delaware River.(D,R)
Day 2 Thursday, July 26th— We start our day with a full breakfast at the hotel, and travel a few miles to Grey Towers, the home of Gifford Pinchot, the head of the National Forest Service under Teddy Roosevelt, making him one of the fathers of the National Park System, as well as a 2-term governor of Pennsylvania. We will tour the house and gardens We will stop in Marlborough, MA, for lunch (on our own) at a restaurant on a reservior, followed by a brief stop at the New Hampshire Liquor Store for beverages to enjoy at Sprucewold Lodge the next few evenings. We will arrive at Sprucewold in the early evening, where we will be welcomed with champagne punch and snacks and a chance to explore this lovely old log lodge that will be our home for the next 4 nights. We will then go to the dining hall where we will enjoy a Maine Coast Dinner, featuring a choice of lobster, salmon, steak or chicken, along with clam chowder, salad and dessert. After dinner, we can take a stroll around the quiet lanes, or chat by the fire. (B,D,R)Day 3 Friday, July 27th—Introduce yourself to the terrific Sprucewold breakfast buffet—a tasty start for a busy day! For non-quilting guests, we can offer a round of golf, sportfishing or whalewatching. We depart Sprucewold Lodge on the motorcoach and travel to Augusta, Maine for a day at the Pine Tree Quilters’ Maine Quilt Show. This show features an exhibit of the finest quilts made by Mainers, and a great group of suppliers to quilters. The motorcoach will take you to lunch (on your own) at a nearby Panera. After lunch, quilters can return to the show, while we will offer a side trip to the Museum of the State of Maine (a wonderful display of the natural features and the industries of the state). In the late afternoon everyone will travel back to Sprucewold Lodge, where a terrific Italian buffet will be offered, with roast loin of pork, chicken marsala and haddock with crabmeat topping, salad and a selection of Italian desserts! After dinner, Jim LaValle will sing the tunes made famous by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Johnny Mercer. A lovely evening! (B,D,R)Day 4 Saturday, July 28th—Start this day with a big breakfast at the Sprucewold buffet. Then we are off to the town of Boothbay Harbor to board Cap’n Fish’s boat for a cruise to Damariscove Island. This island had a fishing colony as early as 1604, and played an important part in colonial history. We will be back in town at noon for lunch on our own. In the afternoon, you can shop the town, or elect to visit the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden. This new garden complex is considered by many to be the most important botanical garden in New England. A wonderful setting, with very imaginative hardscape and lovely plantings Anoth option for the afternoon would be to take the early bus back to the lodge and relax on the porch with a good book. Dinner this evening will be a delicious soup and sandwich meal (with outstanding desserts) at the Carousel Music Theater where we will be treated to memorable vocal performances by their talented cast. (B,D,R)Day 5 Sunday, July 29th—Another opportunity to sample the breakfast buffet at Sprucewold. Then we are off on the motorcoach to Rockport (a town so pretty that all of the "Murder, She Wrote" exterior footage was shot here). We will stop at the wharf in the beautiful harbor. Be sure to find the statue of Andre—the seal who captured the hearts of the people of Rockport! Then we will travel to Camden to see the windjammers in the harbor, as well as the galleries and shops of this seaside town. We will travel to the top of Mt. Battie, a 700-foot coastal mountain that offers spectacular views of the coastline and off-shore islands in the Gulf of Maine. We will stop in Thomaston on our way home to have an opportunity to purchase the inmates wood crafts at the Maine Prison Store. Dinner this evening will be a cookout-style dinner at the lodge, with burgers, hot dogs, barbequed chicken, potato salad, green salad and dessert. Entertainment this evening will be a showing of "Carousel" on the big-screen TV ("Carousel" was filmed in Boothbay Harbor in 1956). (B,D,R)Day 6 Monday, July 30th—A last chance to sample the Sprucewold breakfast buffet, and then we are off on the motorcoach to the Keepsake Quilting Supply in New Hampshire (this is one of the best-known supplier of quilting supplies on the web, and worth a stop). Lunch on our ownfollows this stop, and later we visit the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts (located in the area where much of the American cloth was loomed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s). The museum has a great collection of New England patterned quilts We continue to travel toward home, and spend the night at the Ethan Allen Hotel in Danbury, Connecticut. This hotel is owned by the furniture maker of the same name, and is a very nice property.We will give you vouchers for dinner this evening, so that you can dine at your leisure. (B,D,R) Day 7 Tuesday, July 31st—Enjoy a breakfast buffet at the Ethan Allen Hotel. Then we will travel to West Virginia, with a stop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for lunch on our own. We would expect to arrive back in the Wheeling area by 8:00 PM.
